Library Media Specialist (State School Teacher)

The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced State School Teacher (12 Months) (35 Hour) to join our team at Osborn Correctional Institution -in Somers, Connecticut.

The Connecticut Department of Correction Unified School District #1 is dedicated to providing quality educational programs for incarcerated individuals.  Academic knowledge, vocational competencies and life skills integrated with technology are offered to students in a positive environment to foster lifelong learning, multicultural awareness and a successful transition to society.

This year-round position is full time on first shift, thirty-five hours per week, Monday through Friday.

Please note, applicants for this recruitment must possess a valid 062 School Library Media Specialist State of Connecticut Teaching Endorsement.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

  • Prioritizing safety and security as it pertains to staff, victims, citizens, and offenders;
  • Teaching early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subject, and/or special education curricula;
  • Developing educational plans for individuals and groups;
  • Setting short and long term goals and evaluating student progress;
  • Participating in planning team meetings and case review conferences to assess student behavior;
  • Holding conferences with parents or officials concerned with student performance
  • Relating to professionals in ancillary educational roles;
  • Maintaining student records and writing reports;
  • Modeling best teaching practices;
  • Serve as an advocate for the school’s library programs and services by utilizing a variety of communications and technology tools;
  • Create and maintain an inviting, safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment that fosters intellectual inquiry;
  • Provide active learning experiences and opportunities to meet the diverse needs of students;
  • Ensure flexible and equitable access to resources that support the student’s academic and personal learning needs;
  • Instruct students and staff in information and technology literacy skills, including reading for understanding, the research process, engaging inquiry, collaboration, critical thinking, developing multiple literacies, and understanding copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property;
  • Participate in professional growth activities that result in enhanced knowledge of best practices in school library programs;
  • Collaborate with staff to select, implement, and adapt information literacy skills in support of curriculum across all content areas;
  • Develop and maintain up-to-date, culturally diverse collection of print and non-print resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, the teaching styles, the instructional strategies used, and reflect students’ interests.
