Urban Forestry Summer Intern
URBAN FORESTRY SUMMER INTERN (2 POSITIONS)
Hours: approximately 35/week
Duration: 8 to 10 weeks
Job Responsibilities:
Connecticut College offers paid summer internships working with Arboretum staff in conjunction with New London Trees and the Public Works Department of New London to conduct an urban forest inventory. The position involves overseeing a program for increasing tree canopy in New London in collaboration with 3 high school students.
Responsibilities include:
- engaging with the community to create public awareness of the social, economic, and environmental value trees hold,
- maintenance of newly planted trees,
- identifying future planting locations, and
- field data collection of tree and site information on hand-held computers including tree species identification, location, size and condition along city streets, school grounds and parks.
The work requires the ability to be outside along city streets all day long.
Special Skills: Preference will be given to candidates who have some of the following qualifications: coursework in horticulture, botany, or another plant related field; tree identification experience; strong organizational skills; career aspirations in urban forestry, horticulture, botany or related field.
Also required: Students must take LA 103 career prep course prior to this internship.
