Arboretum Summer Horticultural Intern

 ARBORETUM SUMMER HORTICULTURAL INTERN

 (3 POSITIONS) 

Hours: 35/week (7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Mon-Fri) 
Duration: Up to 12 weeks from May 26 to mid August 

Job Responsibilities: 
Connecticut College Arboretum offers paid summer internships working with Arboretum staff to gain knowledge and understanding of the skills associated with managing public gardens and natural areas. 

Interns will be trained and will participate in: 

  • landscape maintenance of plant collections and natural lands
  • watering
  • invasive plant ID and removal techniques
  • trail maintenance
  • leaf blowing, mowing, brush-cutting, and string trimming
  • planting and transplanting
  • mulching
  • greenhouse assistance
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
  •  

Learning Opportunities:

Interns will be introduced to other important work of arboreta and public gardens such as plant curation, public programs, academic research and community outreach. Through an educational working environment, Arboretum staff will informally share knowledge and insight of their areas of expertise. Interns will be encouraged to keep garden journals, give occasional tree of the week presentations to other interns and staff, and complete a small project in the Arboretum. Interns will attend 1-2 field trips to other public gardens, plant nurseries, or managed natural areas to deepen their appreciation for and broaden their perspectives of the field of horticulture. 

Special Skills: Preference will be given to candidates who have some of the following qualifications: one or more years of study in horticulture, botany, landscape design, or plant related field; previous work experience in a related field; and/or career aspirations in horticulture or related field.
