Food Pantry Assistant

South Seattle College is looking to hire a Food Pantry Assistant (Part Time, Temporary, Hourly Assistant II) in the Department of Student Services. 

The hourly rate for this position is $24.13 per hour.

This position is scheduled to work 16 hours per week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between the hours of 10 am - 3pm. The applicant shall not be a student currently enrolled at Seattle Colleges as there can be no conflict of work schedule with class schedules.

Ideal Start date: September 17, 2025

Anticipated End Date: June 12, 2026 (no work during quarter breaks or summer) This is a temporary part-time position with eligibility to work up to one (1) year or 1,050 hours whichever comes first. Then, the position will end.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. The employer will not sponsor applicants for work visas.

Position Summary 

The South Seattle College Food Pantry was founded by student leaders in 2017. Surveys have indicated nearly 60% of our students are food insecure. By providing access to free snacks, shelf-stable and fresh foods, we strive to reduce the barriers our students face in achieving their educational goals. We serve approximately 150 student visits per week. The Pantry is located in the Jerry M. Brockey Student Center within the Office of Student Life.

What you will be working on: 

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Food Pantry by creating a welcoming and respectful learning environment (Pantry hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays between 11 am - 2pm. Mondays, we receive grocery deliveries & stock)
  • Manage and train a small team of student leaders, update pantry manual online 
  • Assure safety and cleanliness in pantry, monitor refrigerator temperatures, review best buy dates and inventory, compost expired fresh product, tear down cardboard boxes, recycling
  • Assure pantry check-in form is functioning to capture data and comments from students
  • Oversee stocking and re-stocking procedures
  • Coordinate Food Pantry signage
  • Oversee diaper distribution with volunteer, stocking, review request form
  • Share community resources related to food
  • Must be available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays, from 10 am - 3pm, and Mondays 10 am -12:30 pm during Fall, Winter and Spring quarters (quarter breaks and summer off) 
  • Work closely with the Program Specialist to ensure the success of the pantry and further the mission and short and long-term success of the pantry
  • Occasionally drive campus vehicle and pick-up donations and special orders
  • Attend meetings as needed

In cooperation with the Student Leadership Program Specialist:

  • Order fresh food on a weekly basis, work with vendors to coordinate and receive delivery
  • Order shelf stable food as needed, assure food is culturally reflective of student population
  • Coordinate refrigerator use in Brockey catering as needed and organize storage rooms
  • Oversee student work schedules and timecards and food handling cards 
  • Distribute farmer's market coupons 
  • Perform other duties as required.

What you bring as a candidate: 

  • Associate degree and 2 years food bank experience OR equivalent education and experience
  • Knowledge of food safety regulations
  • Experience training people and developing teams
  • Strong demonstrated written email and verbal communication and customer service skills
  • Understanding of food insecurity, hunger relief services, food nutrition and diverse food offerings reflective of our student populations
  • Prior experience working with diverse communities and understanding the concepts of power, privilege and oppression
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate vehicle for work-related purposes
